Dive Centers

For those who want to learn to scuba dive, but live a little too far away to do so in the ocean, dive centers offer a place to practice. They can be found in many cities, and offer a range of classes for beginning to advanced divers. Those who are thinking about vacationing in a tropical place and want to try their hand at diving can take a few classes to learn the basics. Instructors will teach them about the equipment used in scuba diving, like air tanks, breathing regulators, and gauges.

Basic safety tips will be covered, including what sort of dangerous animals to look out for. More advanced classes will cover topics like decompression (stopping at certain depths to allow your body to adjust to the pressure). Larger centers might also offer a range of specialized classes, such as underwater photography, diving on shipwrecks, or how to identify fish. These classes are ideal for hobby divers who go a regular basis. Many dive centers will also have a store of some size where you can buy scuba equipment. What is available will depend on the size of the store and whether the center has a specialty.

One that offers many classes in identify different species of fish might have a large book section; another might emphasize photography and sell a range of underwater cameras. Generally, though, a dive center store will sell basics like wet and dry suits, face masks and flippers, and air tanks. Likewise, those beginning divers who want to know enough for a scuba vacation can stick with a basic class.
